Welcome Aboard

home of the bucs

Welcome to the best hall at the University of Notre Dame. No, seriously. Baumer Bucs make up a brotherhood unlike any other on campus. The four years you spend at Notre Dame are marked by the strong community we share in Baumer. Whether it’s eating a meal altogether at the signature Baumer Table™ in South Dining Hall, grilling burgers in Baumer Bay on a nice fall day, or winning intense soccer matches with our Sporting Pepto Soccer Team, Baumer Hall is a visible representation of the finest quality of men. You can recognize a Baumer Buc by his sincerity, care for others, and sense of inclusion.

The Sixth Voyage

This year marks our Sixth year of being the best dorm on campus, and we’re committed to continuing this legacy on what we all call The Sixth Voyage. To all our first-years, congratulations on your selection to become a member of this great hall, and we look forward to your arrival in August. Our Welcome Weekend Team has been putting in the hours this summer to make sure of a safe and sound arrival on the ship. Your journey awaits.

Meet the Welcome Weekend Chairs

Co-Chair

Sam Thornton

Hi all! My name is Sam Thornton. I am a junior from Eugene, Oregon, and I can’t wait to serve as one of Baumer's Welcome Weekend co-chairs this fall! I am studying Mechanical Engineering on the Pre-Medical track, with a minor in Chemistry. On campus, I work at the University’s rock climbing gym, host a student radio show, and serve as one of Baumer’s events commissioners. When I find the time, I enjoy playing the guitar, running, and woodworking.

That said, I very much look forward to meeting all of you! My job is to help facilitate a smooth and delightful transition into the greatest dorm on campus. If anything comes up, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thanks, and Go Bucs!

A Letter To New Students From Sam and James

Welcome to Baumer Hall, Gentlemen!

On behalf of our fellow Buccaneers, we are so excited to meet you and welcome you aboard! As you settle in, you will soon discover that Baumer Hall is more than just a beautiful four-story building — it is a tight-knit community of peers, friends, and brothers.

Whether it be in late-night study sessions, Saturday game days, renowned intramurals, time spent in the chapel, section events, or hall council meetings, you will quickly find your place here. Baumer is a vibrant community built on brotherhood, charity, faith, and celebration. Our current residents will all tell you that this is truly a “place of special welcome,” full of great men who do great things. Four years down the line, you will look back fondly and remember this place as home.

For now, though, let's focus on what lies just ahead. In a few short weeks, you will find yourself on campus, trying to fit a futon in the elevator, running around with your fellow freshman Bucs, and making those last-minute Target runs. While the excitement and frenzy of Welcome Weekend can be thrilling, it may be overwhelming at times, too. That is why we have a strong support system in place - we Co-Chairs, the Welcome Weekend team, and the entire hall staff are here for you every step of the way.

That being said, if you have any questions or concerns as you prepare for move-in, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Our emails are linked above, and we would love to hear from you.

Again, welcome to Baumer Hall, and we look forward to move-in!

Per Ardua Ad Spes,

Samuel Thornton and James Nugent

  • Yes! And all dorms at ND will be getting new washers and dryers in the fall! All of our washers and dryers are free to use, and they are located in the basement next to the gym.

  • Welcome Weekend is an exciting time. Focus on moving in, and the Welcome Weekend Team will take care of the rest. For information on the events outside of Baumer during Welcome Weekend, check the official university-wide schedule here.

  • Each room comes with a mattress, wooden desk and hutch, a wooden desk chair, a wooden bed frame (loftable), and a wooden wardrobe with 3 drawers.

To maximize space, we recommend lofting your bed, and it helps to talk with your roommate about this beforehand. Ask the Welcome Weekend Team to help you loft your bed with a mallet then sit back and watch the magic happen.

  • While it varies between each resident, a former Baumer VP made a list of what he packed and ended up using during his first year at Notre Dame. The current administration approves!
